It’s interesting to read that in the latest set of figures published by Ofcom the proportion of 15-24 year olds using social networking sites is falling while more people from older groups are joining.
In the first quarter of 2009 there was an increase of 6% in the proportion of British 24-35 year olds with social networking profiles and an increase of 8% for 35-54 year olds, against the same period last year.
The business networking site, Linkedin, has seen it’s UK audience rise by 63%.
Research from comScore shows that older internet users are quickly catching on to the social networking phenomenon, with two thirds of over 55s having visited sites like Facebook, MySpace and Twitter during May.

Facebook is now the fourth most visited website in the world, behind Google, Microsoft and Yahoo!.
The social networking site has increased by over 150% in the past 12 months and added 24 million unique visitors in June alone. The website is visited by 340 million unique users monthly and has 250 million active users.
Google is still at the top of the tree with 844 million monthly unique visitors, that includes all of its web properties, including Gmail and YouTube — whereas Facebook only counts Facebook.com.e
With this number of users the site should be a worthwhile place for you to spend a little time experimenting with some of the social media marketing techniques we have talked about. There is a good following for food related subjects on both Facebook and Twitter making them a good place to talk about your own experiences with fresh local and seasonal produce. We have been involved with a number of Yorkshire Dales food producers and retailers who are finding Twitter a good place to make new contacts and have started to build a steady following for our own Twitter page.
Just imagine if you could find a way of taking 10p of each of those users!
